Geelvinck Fortepiano Symposium – Call for papers

Location: Geelvinck Music Museum Zutphen
Date: Wednesday, August 14th, 2018, 10:30 – 17:00 hrs

The purpose of the 2018 Geelvinck Fortepiano Symposium is to advance our state of knowledge on the history, performance practices, repertoire and building techniques associated with historic pianos (i.e. fortepianos, square pianos and related instruments such as the clavichord and glass armonica) from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The symposium will be an essential element of the eighth edition of the Geelvinck Fortepiano Festival.

The symposium intends to bring together scholars, professional performers, museum curators, collectors, builders, restorers and tuners, as well as students and knowledgeable amateurs from around the globe. The general discussion will center on the theme Fortepianos, Fashion & Dance. Papers (lectures and lecture-recitals) and poster presentations on other aspects of historic piano culture will also be considered, depending on their relevance and originality.

This edition, the symposium will include lectures, poster presentations and lecture-recitals, as well as a discussion panel and a ‘speakers’ corner’. The symposium will be moderated by Dr. Michael Tsalka, historic keyboard performer and the artistic director of the Geelvinck Fortepiano Festival.

Our keynote speakers will be:
• Prof. Peter Sykes (USA), Boston University and Julliard School of Music
• Prof.Em. Dennis James (USA), glass armonica (formerly Rutgers University, New Jersey)

Guest speakers will also include Diana Weston (Australia), Peter Bavington (UK) together with Sander Ruys (Netherlands), Ratko Delorko (Germany) and Gabriele Toia (Italy). After the closing of the symposium, presenters are invited for an evening recital by Peter Sykes.
