Programma rond Frédéric Chopin en David Popper

Chopin heeft veel composities voor piano geschreven. Dat is algemeen bekend. Daarnaast had hij grote voorliefde voor de cello
en neemt de cello een belangrijke plaats in zijn kamermuziekwerken.

David Popper, in Praag geboren, was een van de grootste cellisten van zijn tijd. Hij was een vernieuwer op het gebied van cellotechniek. Liszt beval hem in 1886 aan als leraar aan het Conservatorium in Budapest, waar net een afdeling voor strijkinstrumenten was geopend.
Popper componeerde 4 celloconcerten, een Requiem voor 3 cello’s en orkest en veel kortere salonstukken voor cello. De daarbij geschreven pianobegeleidingspartijen zijn interessant en virtuoos. Wellicht kreeg Popper advies van zijn vrouw Sophie Menter.
Zij was een bekende en briljante pianiste, leerlinge van onder anderen Franz Liszt, die haar “mijn enige pianodochter” noemde.

In dit programma zijn Mazurka’s, Nocturnes en Polonaises van beide componisten te horen, gecomponeerd door enerzijds een pianovirtuoos, anderzijds een cellovirtuoos. De invloed van Frédéric Chopin op David Popper is hier duidelijk hoorbaar.

Adam Javorkai (www.adamjavorkai.com) speelt op een cello van Lorenzo Carcassi, gebouwd in 1753. Deze cello was lange tijd in bezit van Arnold Földesy, een van de meest belangrijke studenten van David Popper. Wellicht herinnert de cello zich zijn muziek!

De Hongaarse cellist Ádam Jávorkai en de Nederlandse pianiste Clara Biermasz wonnen in 2008 de eerste prijs bij het internationale muziekconcours ‘Premio Citta di Padova’ in Italië en waren ook prijswinnaars bij de 18th International Chamber Music Competition in Thessaloniki, Griekenland.
Zij gaven concerten in Nederland, Italië, Frankrijk, Denemarken, Oostenrijk, Engeland, Hongarije en Oman. Adam is in 2009 in Oostenrijk door Bank Austria en Jeunesse Austria verkozen tot Artist of the Year.
In 2014 verscheen de eerste cd van het duo met cello sonates van Brahms en Grieg bij het Oostenrijkse label Gramola.

Clara Biermasz – piano

De Nederlandse pianiste Clara Biermasz (1981) begon haar muzikale opleiding op 4-jarige leeftijd met vioollessen. Haar eerste pianolessen kreeg zij op 11-jarige leeftijd. Uiteindelijk koos zij voor dit instrument.
Vanaf 1999 studeerde zij aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten te Utrecht bij Alexander Warenberg en Klara Würtz. Zij behaalde in 2004 haar Bachelor of Arts diploma. Vervolgens studeerde Clara in Boedapest aan de Franz Liszt Academie bij prof. Balázs Szokolay en Balázs Réti. Zij behaalde daar in 2007 haar postgraduate diploma. Daarna studeerde zij in Wenen aan de Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst bij Michael Hruby. In 2012 behaalde zij hier haar Master-diploma met onderscheiding.

Clara won verschillende prijzen op nationale en internationale concoursen, waaronder een eerste prijs (VSB prijs) op het Prinses Christina Concours in 1996.
Sinds 2005 vormt Clara een duo met de Hongaarse cellist Ádám Jávorkai. In 2008 wonnen zij de eerste prijs in de categorie kamermuziek en daarnaast de eerste prijs over alle categorieën, de Primo Premio Assoluto, bij het internationale muziekconcours “Premio Citta di
Padova”, in Padua in Italië. In 2008 waren Clara en Ádám ook prijswinnaars bij de 18th
International Chamber Music Competition in Thessaloniki, Griekenland.

Clara volgde Masterclasses bij Angelica May, Itamar Golan, Jan Wijn, Gergely Boganyi, Martijn van den Hoek, Alan Weiss, Istvan Gulyas, Jean-Claude VandenEynden en Paolo Giacometti.

Clara kreeg beurzen van het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, de Stichting Willem Mengelberg Fonds (2004, 2006, 2008), de Stichting Fonds voor de geld- en effectenhandel, de Stichting
A.F.V.O.M.S, de Stichting Vreedefonds en de Stichting Niemeyer Fonds.

Clara trad in Nederland op in o.a. de Doelen, het Vredenburg Utrecht, het Muziekcentrum Frits Philips in Eindhoven, de Hermitage in Amsterdam en in kasteel Duivenvoorde.
Daarnaast trad zij op in Hongarije, in o.a. het Szépmüvészeti Museum in Boedapest, het Nemzeti Theater in Miskolc (Hongarije), in Oostenrijk bij het Chopin Festival Gaming, het Wiener Konzerthaus, in de Richard Strauss Residenz in Wenen, op het Beethoven Festival in Wenen, het Sommerfestival Bogense in Denemarken, in Italië in het Palazzo Montanari Vicenza, het Palazzo Albrizzi in Venetië en het Palazzo Zacco-Armeni in Padua en op de Nederlandse Ambassade in Caïro ( Egypte). Verder trad zij op voor internationale radio- en televisiestations en op prestigieuze festivals, zoals de Settimane Musicali al Teatro Olimpico.

Adam Javorkai – cello

Ádám Jávorkai (1977) begon zijn muzikale opleiding in 1992 aan het Hans Richter Conservatorium in zijn geboorteplaats Györ (Hongarije). Vervolgens studeerde hij aan het Béla Bartók Conservatorium in Boedapest. Hij studeerde in 1996 af met onderscheiding. Daarna vervolgde hij zijn studie aan de Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wenen, bij professor Angelica May en Reinhard Latzko. In juni 2004 behaalde hij daar zijn Master of Arts diploma met unanieme onderscheiding.
Adam behaalde in 1990, 1993 en 1996 de eerste prijs bij het Nationaal Celloconcours van Hongarije. Tevens won hij eerste prijzen op het E. Vajda Strijkinstrumenten Concours (Hongarije) in 1991, 1992 en 1993. Ook tijdens zijn studie won hij diverse internationale prijzen. Zo kreeg hij in 1998 de Martinu prijs, in 2002 de Bartók prijs en in 2003 de Kodály prijs. In Slovenië werd Ádám in 2000 uitgeroepen tot cellist van het jaar en kreeg hij tevens een prijs voor de beste vertolking van Sloveense composities. Deze prijs werd toegekend door de vereniging van Sloveense componisten.
In 2008 won Adam, samen met de Nederlandse pianiste Clara Biermasz, de eerste prijs bij het internationale muziekconcours ‘Premio Citta di Padova’ in Italië in de categorie kamermuziek. Daarnaast wonnen zij de Primo Premio Assoluto-prijs en werden hiermee uitgeroepen tot winnaar over alle categorieën deelnemers. In 2008 waren Ádám en Clara prijswinnaars bij de 18th International Chamber Music Competition in Thessaloniki, Griekenland. In 2008 won Ádám de eerste prijs bij het ‘Soloist and Orchestra’ Concours in Italië. In 2009 werd hij, met zijn broer, de violist Sándor Jávorkai, verkozen tot Artist of the Year 2009.
Ádám trad als solist op met onder meer de volgende orkesten: Boedapester Filharmonie, Filharmonie Györ, Noord Hongaars Filharmonieorkest, Sinfonietta Baden, Jeugdsymphonieorkest Genua, Nationaal Filharmonisch orkest van Budapest, Savaria Symphonie Orkest, Szeged Symphonie Orkest, Debrecen Symphonie Orkest, Philharmonie Orkest Verona, Sofia Symphonie Orkest.
Als solocellist werkte hij samen met dirigenten als Marcello Viotti en Maris Janssons.
In 2003 vertegenwoordigde Ádám de Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien bij het Asia/Pasific Sylff Regional Forum te Cairo. In 2005 vertegenwoordigde hij Oostenrijk bij het Internationaal Jeunesse Festival in Brussel en bij het EU-Muziekfestival in Warschau ter gelegenheid van de uitbreiding van de EU. Andere bijzondere optredens gaf Ádám in het kader van de Vereniging “Wien-Turin Virtuosi”, een initiatief van Prof. Michael Frischenschlager. In 2006 waren er optredens met Roby Lakatos, en tijdens een galaconcert in het Wiener Konzerthaus speelde hij onder meer met Roby Lakatos, Michel Camillo, Julius Drake en Rolando Villazón. In 2007 maakte hij een tournee door China in het kader van Famous Instruments Great Soloists.
In 2002 maakte hij een cd-opname met het Philharmonisch Orkest van Györ (Brahms, Dubbelconcert en Tsjaikovski’s Rococo variaties).
In 2009 maakte hij een cd-opname van het celloconcert van Dvorák, voor het Oostenrijkse label Gramola. In 2011 maaktij hij een tweede cd voor dit label met werken voor viool & cello van o.a. Bartók en Kodály. Ádám maakte talrijke opnames voor internationale radio -en televisiestations.
Hij ontving beurzen van de volgende organisaties: de Annie Fischer Stichting in Boedapest (2001, 2002, 2003), het Herbert von Karajan centrum in Wenen (2002) en van de Nippon Foundation in Japan (2003, 2004).
Ádám geeft regelmatig masterclasses in verscheidene landen zoals bijvoorbeeld in Bulgarije, bij de Orpheus Academy, bij de Asahikawa International String Seminar in Japan, de Judenburger Sommer in Österreich, en op de Muziekuniversiteit in Bogota, Colombia. Tevens was hij jurylid bij de 7e editie van het internationale muziekconcours Premio Citta di Padova.
Als solist gaf hij concerten in de Tokyo Opera City, de „Verboden stad”, de Wiener Musikverein, het Wiener Konzerthaus, het Berliner Konzerthaus, het Schleswig-Holstein Festival, de Nieuwe Philharmonie in Luxemburg, de Settimane musicali al Teatro Olimpico, het Chopin Festival Gaming, het Varna Summer Festival, de Liszt Akademie Budapest, het Cello Festival Dordrecht etc.
Hij maakte concertreizen naar Tsjechië, Hongarije, Oman, Oostenrijk, Colombia, Denemarken, Kosovo, Frankrijk, Griekenland, Bulgarije, Engeland, Slowakije, Turkije, Japan, Noorwegen, Egypte, Duitsland, Spanje, China, Siberië, Italië, Israel, België, Luxemburg, Nederland, Polen en Rusland etc.

Ádám Jávorkai and Clara Biermasz met in Budapest in 2005. They attended chamber music classes at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
In July 2008, Jávorkai and Biermasz won first prizes at the international music competition ‘Premio Città di Padova’ the first prize in the category of chamber music and ‘Primo Premio Assoluto’ – the overall winner in all categories (respectively in duo with Ádám Jávorkai) at the international competition ‘Premio Città di Padova’, Italy (2008). In 2008, Clara was also a prize-winner at the ‘18th International Chamber Music Competition Thessaloniki’ in Greece.
Amongst other places, they have performed in the Netherlands, France, Italy, Great Britain, Austria, Oman and Italy.
The duo Ádám Jávorkai and Clara Biermasz has a wide repertoire and is always in search of undiscovered compositions or composers that deserve to be performed. In the past, they have had great success with their performances of the cello sonatas by Zoltán Kodály and Ernö (Ernst von) Dohnányi and with rarely performed pieces like the two cello sonatas by Camille Saint-Saëns.

CLARA BIERMASZ, Pianist:

The Dutch-born pianist Clara Biermasz received her musical training in the classes of Prof. Alexander Warenberg and Prof. Klára Würtz at the Academy of the Arts in Utrecht, the Netherlands. She completed her bachelor studies in 2004 and then studied in the classes of Prof. Balázs Szokolay and Prof. Balázs Réti at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, Hungary, and in the class of Prof. Michael Hruby at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna. She completed her M.A. with distinction in 2012.

She is an award-winner at many international competitions, including the first prize (VSB Prize) and the Youth Jury Prize at the Princess Christina Competition in the Netherlands (1996), the first prize in the category of chamber music and ‘Primo Premio Assoluto’ – the overall winner in all categories (respectively in duo with Ádám Jávorkai) at the international competition ‘Premio Città di Padova’, Italy (2008). ADAM JAVORKAI, Cellist:

Jávorkai attended the Hans Richter Conservatoire in his native city and the Béla Bartók Conservatoire in Budapest, which he completed with distinction. From 1996 to 2004, he studied in the classes of Prof. Angelika May and Prof. Reinhard Latzko at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna. He completed his M.A. with unanimous distinction. Currently, he is pursuing a doctorate in musicology in Vienna. For further perfection, he has attended master classes held by Miklós Perényi, Ina-Esther Joost, Tobias Kühne, Ferenc Rados and Anner Bijlsma.

Ádám Jávorkai has ended many competitions with honours. As a teenager, he won the Hungarian Emil Vajda Stringed Instruments Competition for three years in succession after 1991 and the first prize of the National Cello Competition in Hungary in 1990, 1993 and 1996. 1998: Bohuslav Martinu Prize of the International Summer Academy Prague-Vienna-Budapest; 2000: Appreciation Prizes ‘Cellist of the Year’ and ‘Best Interpreter of Slovenian Compositions’, awarded by the Association of Slovenian Composers; 2002: Bartók Prize, Semmering, Austria; 2003: Kodály Prize for the duo with Sándor Jávorkai, Austria; 2008: in a duo with Clara Biermasz first prize at the international competition ‘Premio Città di Padova’, Italy, category chamber music, and at the same place awarded the ‘Primo Premio assoluto’ together with Clara Biermasz as the overall winners of all categories; the same year, first prize at ‘Soloist and Orchestra’, Italy. In 2009, Sándor and Ádám Jávorkai were together honoured as ‘Artist of the Year’ by Jeunesse and Bank Austria.
From 2001 to 2003, Ádám was a scholarship-holder of the Annie Fischer Foundation in Budapest, in 2002 he received a scholarship from the Herbert von Karajan Centre in Vienna and scholarships from the Nippon Foundation, Tokyo, in 2003 and 2004.
Ádám Jávorkai regularly holds master classes in different countries, e.g. at the Asahikawa International String Seminar in Japan, at the Orpheus Academy in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, at the Judenburg Summer in Austria, at the Music University in Bogota, Colombia, and at the Kodály Society in Wales.

As a soloist, Ádám Jávorkai regularly appears with the Budapest Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Györ, the North Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Youth Symphony Orchestra in Genoa, the Sinfonietta Baden, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the Szeged Symphony Orchestra, the Sofia Soloists, the Orchestra of the Arena di Verona and other orchestras as well as with the concert organizer National Philharmonia Budapest.

As a cello soloist, he has worked together with conductors such as Marcello Viotti und Mariss Jansons. He has made many recordings for international radio and television stations (including for the Austrian classical channel Ö1 and Radio Stephansdom and for the Hungarian Radio Bartók). He has also collaborated in an ORF television production. In 2002, he produced a CD with works by Brahms (Double Concerto), Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Györ under Ádám Medveczky. In 2009, he made a second CD with the Concerto for Cello op. 104 by Dvořák (Gramola 98865) and in 2011 a further CD with duos for violin and cello by Bartók, Kodály etc. (Gramola 98916). In 2013, a third CD was released under the aegis of the Mozarthaus String Quartet with two string quartets by Mozart (Gramola 99000) and in 2014 a further CD with cello sonatas by Brahms and Grieg (Gramola 99034).
Ádám was a representative of Austria at the International Jeunesse Festival in Brussels in 2005 and at the EU Music Festival in Warsaw on the occasion of the EU’s eastward expansion. In 2003, he followed an invitation from the Tokyo Foundation and took part in the Sylff Africa/Europe Regional Forum in Cairo in 2003 as a representative of Vienna Music University.

As a soloist or chamber musician, he has held concerts in Tokyo Opera City, the ‘Forbidden City’, Beijing, the Suntory Hall, Tokyo, the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Arts Center in Seoul, at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, in the New Philharmonia in Luxembourg, at the ‘Settimane musicali al Teatro Olimpico’ in Vicenza, at the Chopin Festival in Gaming, at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, at the Cello Festival in Dordrecht, at the Beethoven Festival in Vienna, in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest and many other places.

Concert tours have also taken him to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Oman, Colombia, Austria, the UK, Belgium, Denmark, Kosovo, France, Turkey, Japan, Norway, Egypt, Germany, Spain, China, Siberia, Italy, Israel, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Greece and Russia.

In 2014, in recognition of his work against discrimination and for international understanding he was awarded an Honorary Membership of the Raoul Wallenberg Foundation by Baruch Tenembaum.
