The singspiel and the fortepiano

Putting together the  Beethoven’s variations on Papageno’s aria“Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” (from Die Zauberflöte) with the second piano sonata by Carl Maria von Weber, Evan and I wanted to enlighten the Singspiel as source of inspiration for instrumental music. If the variations by Beethoven introduce a variety of states of mind in the music, from the comicality to the mournfulness, Weber makes of his sonata a real theatre piece, with imaginary scenes of Nature, sudden happenings, contrasting characters. The second Sonata for piano and cello by Beethoven is instead not directly inspired by the theatre, but has a strong dramatic vitality in itself. The opening of the sonata brings to the imagination a dramatic opera scene. In the Allegro molto più tosto Presto the two instruments interact like two actors on stage, with the consequent growth a bristling energy. Again a smile shows up in the last movement, bringing us back to the atmosphere of the Zauberflöte, that Beethoven considered the greatest among Mozart’s operas.

Instrument: een fortepiano met Weens mechaniek gebouwd door Joseph Böhm omstreeks 1820 in Wenen. Dit instrument (klavierbreedte: FF-f4) met maar liefst vijf pedalen voor veschillende effecten (waaronder de Janitsaren roffel en bel) is in bruikleen van de restaurator Gijs Wilderom. Een vergelijkbaar instrument van deze bouwer bevindt zich in de collectie van het Met in New York.
