ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Composer Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) is mainly known for didactic works such as the sonatinas or the etudes that today, two hundred years later, are still played in conservatories and music schools. These works, however, are only a small part of his output. Clementi also composed symphonies and more than seventy sonatas for the piano.
Clementi was a multifaceted figure who, besides composing, giving concerts, conducting, teaching, and promoting orchestral music, also was a music publisher and a piano manufacturer in London. Being a great traveller and a multilingual, sociable person, he had many friends, with whom he often performed in the most prestigious London salons. In today’s performance, we will be able to listen to pieces by some of them.
Among the works performed is a sonata by the Viennese pianist and composer Marianna Auenbrugger, to whom Clementi dedicated one of the two sonatas in this recital. We will also listen to a nocturne and themes with variations by Clementi’s pianist and composer friends John Field, Jan Ladislav Dussek, and Johann Baptist Cramer.
