Microkosmos voor twee instrumenten

Vóór Beethoven zijn sonates voor cello en piano publiceerde was de cello sonate een tamelijk braaf gebeuren. De beladen heftigheid waarmee Beethoven deze sonates vol stopte, met een klankpalet, dynamiek en contrasten die een impressionistische indruk maken, een stijl die pas 100 jaar later opgang zou maken, geven de luisteraar een blik op iets veel groters dan alleen twee instrumenten die samenklinken. Hier wordt de muziek op een groter en grootser plan getild, een soort klank- en harmonie universum op de intieme schaal van de kamermuziek. Inderdaad een microkosmos voor twee instrumenten.

Kasteel Sypesteyn, dicht bij Hilversum, is een bezoek meer dan waard. De verzameling 18e eeuws porcelein is uniek in de wereld, de collectie van Jonkheer van Sypesteyn is niet te versmaden en een bezoek aan het restaurant ook zeker niet. Op minder dan een uur van Den Haag, en een ritje door een prachtig landschap !

Crossing the borders: the singspiel as inspiration for piano and chamber music at the beginning of German Romanticism

Even if Beethoven wrote only one singspiel, the Fidelio (1814), his meditation on Mozart’s masterworks in the same genre was surely long. His variations on Papageno’s aria“Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” (from Die Zauberflöte) are from 1798. Doing that, surely Beethoven followed a tradition of parafrasis and variations on popular opera themes: his variations are not a mere exhibition of virtuosity, but instead an occasion to go through particular states of mind and insert comicality in the music. The classical beauty leaves place to the characteristic and the humoristic, in a well progressed journey towards Romanticism.

His second sonata for cello and piano, op.5, was written in 1796 in honour of King Friedrich Wilhelm II, a good amateur cellist, for whom Haydn and Mozart had written quartets, and first performed by Beethoven himself and the French famous cellist Jean-Pierre Duport. The opening of this sonata is dramatic and can easily recall to the mind an opera scene. The whole sonata sees the two instruments playing and interacting like two actors on the stage, with the consequent growth a bristling energy.

Cello, fortepiano and … the Singspiel

Putting together the  Beethoven’s variations on Papageno’s aria“Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” (from Die Zauberflöte) with the second piano sonata by Carl Maria von Weber, Evan and I wanted to enlighten the Singspiel as source of inspiration for instrumental music. If the variations by Beethoven introduce a variety of states of mind in the music, from the comicality to the mournfulness, Weber makes of his sonata a real theatre piece, with imaginary scenes of Nature, sudden happenings, contrasting characters. The second Sonata for piano and cello by Beethoven is instead not directly inspired by the theatre, but has a strong dramatic vitality in itself. The opening of the sonata brings to the imagination a dramatic opera scene. In the Allegro molto più tosto Presto the two instruments interact like two actors on stage, with the consequent growth a bristling energy. Again a smile shows up in the last movement, bringing us back to the atmosphere of theZauberflöte, that Beethoven considered the greatest among Mozart’s operas.
